There are claims that many roles traditionally held by data scientists are shifting towards analyst responsibilities, and that the engineering team is increasingly taking over machine learning tasks.
Should I continue focusing on data science, or would it be wiser to pivot to computer science?
Furthermore, do machine learning engineers still spend time developing new models, or are they now concentrating on the deployment and maintenance of existing ones?
Based on my personal experience in the field, pursuing a career in data science remains promising if one is committed to continuous learning and skill diversification. While roles may evolve with increased integration of data science with engineering disciplines, the core competencies in statistical analysis, modeling, and data interpretation remain in demand. Modern roles often require balancing analytical tasks with implementation aspects, which means that enhancing skills in reusable infrastructure and code optimization is invaluable. It is crucial to build a versatile profile, combining data science expertise with essential computer science fundamentals to stay competitive.
