Backend Developer Senior Level Compensation Discussion

Hey everyone! I wanted to share my current work situation and see what others think about my compensation package. I work as a senior backend developer for a large HR tech company with over 2000 employees. The company is based in the USA but I work remotely from Portugal.

My Background:

  • 29 years old, married, no kids
  • Computer science degree from abroad
  • 6 years total experience, 3.5 years with current company

Current Role Details:

  • Position: Senior Backend Engineer Level I
  • Work schedule: 40 hours per week, flexible 9-5
  • 30 vacation days per year
  • 100% remote work
  • No on-call duties

Compensation Breakdown:

  • Monthly gross salary: €7,369.98 (€87,860 annually)
  • Net monthly pay: ~€5,093.7
  • Meal vouchers: €167.86/month
  • Remote work allowance: €48.33/month
  • Stock options included
  • €500 home office furniture budget
  • Group insurance plus family hospitalization coverage

Work Environment:

  • Can easily request time off
  • Job gets stressful during certain periods
  • Not managing any team or direct reports

I’m curious how this compares to what others in similar positions are making. Does this seem fair for someone with my experience level working for a multinational company? Any thoughts on the overall package would be appreciated!

honestly, that’s solid for portugal. most backend devs here make way less, even seniors. those stock options could be massive if the company grows. just watch the tax side - figure out how portugal handles foreign income and stock comp before you sign. you’re def doing better than local market rates.

That’s a solid package for Portugal, especially working remote for a US company. €87,860 blows away what you’d typically see here - most senior devs at local companies max out around €50-60k. The benefits are great too: tons of vacation, remote work stipend, and stock options really bump up the total value. I’ve worked both locally and remote internationally, and this level of pay while living in Portugal is pretty rare. You’re getting US wages with Portuguese living costs - that’s a sweet spot. Just make sure the role will challenge you technically and help your career grow over the next few years.
