Hey everyone,
I’m working at a large company where I create software designs for internal use, mostly for data and inventory management. I’m not actively seeking a new job, but I’m curious about whether I can add these designs to my online portfolio.
Is it acceptable to display them online, or should they only be shown in interviews? I’m reluctant to ask my boss about it since that might suggest I’m planning to leave.
If we can’t showcase our current work, how do others in the field demonstrate their abilities when job hunting? How significantly would I need to alter the designs to make them portfolio-friendly?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
As someone who’s been in a similar situation, I’d advise caution when considering showcasing internal software designs. While it’s tempting to display your best work, it’s crucial to respect confidentiality agreements and intellectual property rights. Instead, consider creating mock-ups or conceptual designs based on your experience, but not directly replicating company-specific solutions. This approach allows you to demonstrate your skills without risking legal issues or damaging professional relationships. Another effective strategy is to contribute to open-source projects or create personal side projects that showcase your abilities. These alternatives can be powerful additions to your portfolio and often demonstrate initiative and passion to potential employers.
yo, been there. defs don’t put company stuff online - big no-no. instead, make fake projects that show ur skills. or do some open source stuff on the side. that way u can brag bout ur talents without gettin in trouble. just make sure its different enough from work stuff, ya know?
