Career Change Stories: Former Frontend Developers Share Their New Paths

I’ve been doing frontend development for a while now and really like the design aspects of it. But lately I keep wondering about other career options, especially since artificial intelligence seems to be changing everything in tech.

I’d love to hear from anyone who used to work in frontend development but then made a career switch. Which area did you transition to and what were your reasons for making the change? Did you find your new role more rewarding, more secure, or just more interesting?

I’m just trying to figure out what other possibilities are out there. Any insights would be helpful!

switched to backend dev 2 yrs ago and honestly dont regret it. frontend was moving too fast - frameworks changing constantly, plus the ai stuff had me worried. backends more stable and the problem-solving is different but still engaging. salary bump was nice too.

Switched to product management three years ago after doing frontend for six years. My tech background was huge for talking with dev teams and knowing what’s actually possible to build. What hooked me was the bigger picture - instead of just coding features, I got to decide what we build and why. Had to learn market research, stakeholder management, and business strategy, but the logical thinking and user focus from frontend carried over perfectly. Pay jumped up quite a bit, and I don’t worry about my skills going stale since it’s more about strategy than keeping up with the latest frameworks.

hey! i’m also considering a shift. what’s got you feeling uneasy about frontend work? is it the repetitiveness of projects, or more about the ai changes? ever thought about diving into ux research or maybe product management?
