Hey everyone! I’m a fresh grad facing a career dilemma. I’ve got two job offers on the table: one for backend development and another for DevOps. I’ve always been into Linux and stuff like containers and virtualization, so DevOps sounds exciting. But I’ve heard it’s not usually a junior role.
My original plan was to start in backend (.NET) and switch to DevOps after a few years. Now I’m not sure what to do. The DevOps role focuses on containerization and security, which sounds cool. But I’m worried about career risks.
What do you think? Is jumping into DevOps right away a bad move? Will it be hard to switch back to development later if I don’t like it? Should I stick to my original plan and start with backend?
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. It’s a big decision and I want to make sure I’m not shooting myself in the foot. Thanks for any advice you can give!
Starting in DevOps as a junior isn’t necessarily risky, but it does require careful consideration. DevOps roles often demand a broader skill set, including both development and operations knowledge. If you’re passionate about Linux, containers, and virtualization, this could be an excellent opportunity to dive deep into those areas.
The containerization and security focus of the DevOps role aligns well with industry trends. This experience could prove valuable in the long run, regardless of your career path. However, it’s crucial to ensure the company offers proper mentorship and learning opportunities for junior DevOps engineers.
Regarding career flexibility, DevOps skills are highly transferable. You’ll likely gain exposure to various technologies and practices that are beneficial in both development and operations roles. If you decide to switch to pure development later, your DevOps background could be a significant advantage.
Ultimately, choose the path that excites you most. Both options offer valuable experience, and your enthusiasm will drive your success more than the specific role you start in.
hey, sounds like an exciting choice! devops is def a cool field. have u thought about how much hands-on coding youd get in each role? might be worth askin the companies. also, whats ur gut feeling? which one makes u more excited? sometimes following ur passion leads to awesome opportunities. what do u think?
yo, jumping into devops right away ain’t bad if ur into it. i started as a junior devops and it’s been dope. you’ll learn tons of useful stuff that’s good for any tech job. plus, containerization and security are hot rn. if u love linux and virtualization, go for it! just make sure they’ll teach u proper. don’t stress too much, both paths r solid
