Sometimes I wonder if traditional web development is still worth it when everyone talks about AI and security

Hi folks,

I wanted to ask about something that’s been bothering me recently.

I work mostly with Java/Spring for backend and React for frontend development. I love creating applications, understanding how systems connect, and getting better at web development skills like building APIs, working on architecture, and handling full-stack projects.

But these days it seems like most people I know (friends from university, people on social media, tech communities I’m in) are getting into Machine Learning, Information Security, or Data Analytics. There’s tons of buzz around ChatGPT stuff, data competitions, AI prompting, security challenges, and number analysis. This makes me feel like maybe I’m falling behind by not following these popular areas.

I keep asking myself:
:point_right: Should I worry about focusing on traditional coding instead?
:point_right: Do employers still need regular web developers, or is the market moving toward AI and analytics?
:point_right: Will staying in development work out well for my career, or do I need to learn these trending topics?

I understand that good programmers are important because somebody has to create the applications, websites, and infrastructure that all these AI systems and security tools depend on. Still, it’s tough not to feel left out when everyone talks about machine learning and hacking.

Anyone else dealing with this? Are you staying focused on development work too? How do you feel good about your choices when other fields get more attention?

Thanks for any advice!

I transitioned from data science back to web development after three years, and it was the best career move I’ve made. AI and ML projects often encounter setbacks, but there is a consistent need for functional web applications in every business. Your skills with the Java/Spring and React stack are incredibly valuable. Companies will always require that expertise.

While there is a lot of excitement around AI, traditional web infrastructure remains essential. The demand for experienced full-stack developers continues to be strong, especially with knowledge in system architecture and API design. Don’t undervalue your skills; web development naturally connects with emerging fields, as robust web interfaces and backend systems are vital for most AI applications.

totally get u! web dev is still super relevant. AI needs us to build the stuff, so ur skills ain’t going to waste. the demand for devs is still strong, so just keep sharpening those skills and u’ll be good!

Interesting dilemma! What Java/Spring projects r u working on lately? Have u seen any changes in job postings or client demands in your area? Sometimes the online buzz doesn’t match what’s actually happening in the market. Are u feeling real pressure to switch, or is this more FOMO?
